Children and families services: For children and young people

Understanding a children and families services inspection report

This page explains what is in an inspection report.

Ofsted inspects many different services which are used by children and families, from residential colleges to fostering and adoption services.

Whatever the type of inspection, our report will have a lot of information about the service gathered by the inspectors during the inspection. The report could include:

  • what the facilities are and how many children or young people use the service
  • how well the service is doing its job
  • highlighting the most important things the service does well and things it could do better
  • recommending changes that need to be made so the service can improve.

In the report there may be an overall comment and a grade that sums up the service's performance: outstanding; good; satisfactory; inadequate.
