Ofsted reports in ICT and materials for schools
- Subject professional development materials: ICT - 3 October 2012. Ofsted publishes a number of subject surveys every year. They look at developments in a specific subject over the previous three years, based on specialist inspectors’ visits to a range of schools. This resource has been put together to help teachers in primary and secondary schools improve teaching and learning by reflecting on the main messages from the ICT report, ICT in schools 2008-2011, published in December 2011.
- ICT in schools 2008-11 - 14 December 2011. Since the Education Reform Act of 1988, information and communication technology (ICT) has been compulsory for all pupils aged from 5 to 16 in maintained schools. This report draws on evidence from ICT inspections in primary, secondary and special schools between 2008 and 2011. The use of ICT is considered as both a specialist subject and across the wider school curriculum.
- The safe use of new technologies - 10 February 2010. This report is based on evidence from a small-scale survey carried out between April and July 2009 in 35 maintained schools in England. It evaluates the extent to which the schools taught pupils to adopt safe and responsible practices in using new technologies and how they achieved this. It also assesses the extent and quality of the training the schools provided for their staff. It responds to the report of the Byron Review, Safer children in a digital world.
- The importance of ICT: information and communication technology in primary and secondary schools, 2005/2008 - 3 March 2009. This report draws on evidence from the inspection of information and communication technology (ICT) in more than 177 schools between 2005 and 2008. The schools selected represented the range of schools nationally and included small, large, rural and urban schools from across England. It reports on the quality of provision of ICT in primary and secondary schools and its impact on achievement and standards. The report explores four important areas that are central to developing ICT education in England: assessment; ICT qualifications and progression routes; direct access to ICT provision in classrooms; and value for money.
- Identifying good practice: a survey of college provision in information and communication technology - 30 January 2009. This report looks at what helps post-16 learners make good progress in ICT. Between October 2007 and March 2008, inspectors visited 25 colleges where ICT provision was good or outstanding at their most recent inspection. There are examples of good practice and recommendations for further improvement.
- Virtual learning environments: an evaluation of their development in a sample of educational settings - 13 January 2009. Virtual learning environments (VLEs) use computers to allow remote access to learning materials. As computers are used more routinely, we expect that VLEs will form a significant part of the next generation's experience of learning. This survey evaluates how VLEs are developing in a selection of providers.
- ICT in primary and secondary schools: Ofsted's findings 2005/07 - 9 January 2008. A leaflet summarising Ofsted's findings about ICT in primary and secondary schools.
Inspectors visit 150 schools each year to inform Ofsted’s subject surveys in English, mathematics and science. Survey visits for other subjects are less frequent but continue to take place from time to time.
There is updated guidance for ICT subject visits, aligned to the School inspection handbook from September 2012. Guidance for other subjects will be updated by January 2013.
Case studies of good practice in ICT in schools
Functional skills: DV8 Training Ltd - 2 March 2012. This example demonstrates excellent integration of functional skills with learners’ vocational subjects, and a particularly effective approach to overcoming barriers to learning and raising learners’ aspirations.
David Brown is the National Adviser for ICT. In this role, David leads Ofsted’s work in ICT, coordinating 30 secondary and 30 primary ICT subject inspections each year and writing reports and articles for Ofsted on ICT, as well as leading S5 and S8 school inspections. Before working for Ofsted David, had over 25 years experience teaching in secondary schools, including 20 years as an ICT Coordinator. For 15 years, he worked in senior management in secondary schools in several roles, including designing school management information systems and supporting the use of ICT in partner primary and secondary schools.
