Statistics
Our statistics come from our work in inspection and regulation; they are available on our website. We release each of our official statistics four times a year. For some remit areas there will be a fifth supplementary release to coincide with the publication of the Annual Report.
Our statistics cover:
- early years and childcare – including inspections; outcomes; and childcare provider and place numbers
- maintained schools – including inspections; outcomes; and schools causing concern
- independent schools inspections and outcomes
- Initial Teacher Education inspections and outcomes
- children and families services – including inspections and outcomes for children’s social care and local authority children’s services; and children’s social care provider and place numbers
- adult learning and skills – including learning and skills inspections and outcomes; and initial teacher education inspections and outcomes.
Making the most of Ofsted's data focuses on how we will develop and use official statistics as a basis for improving the way Ofsted works and how we will disseminate the data and statistics we gather through our role as an inspector and regulator.
Our quarterly statistics are available on the website at the links below.
To find our statistics go to the Advanced resources search: under the 'Resource type' header choose 'Statistics' from the expanded list of publications subtypes; in the 'Information about' drop-down choose the remit area that you are interested in.
Our responsibility
The UK Statistics Authority has a code of practice that government departments must follow for their official statistics. The code of practice is available from the UK Statistics Authority website.
You can find out when our next statistics will be published in our Schedule for the release of official statistics which shows the intended programme of official statistics releases through to March 2014 has been published. In line with the Official Statistics Code of Practice, the month of release is indicated. The precise date will be added nearer the time and at least one month in advance of publication. Please note that whilst we make every effort to adhere to this schedule, on occasion it may be necessary to change a scheduled release date for operational purposes. If this happens, we will give as much notice as possible on this web site.
Some of the changes in this release schedule have been made following user feedback. A summary of the recent online survey about our official statistics will be published in due course together with a record of the action taken as a result.
Publication of adoption data for 2011/12 has been rescheduled from October 2012 to 15 November 2012 and publication of fostering data has been rescheduled from October 2012 to 22 November 2012. These are being developed from experimental statistics to official statistics and the quality assurance process, including resolving issues with data returns, will take longer than had been anticipated when the publication schedule was published.
We publish a revisions policy: Statistical notice: Ofsted revisions policy for official statistics. This sets out the circumstances in which revisions will be made to our official statistics and how these revisions will be handled. We review the revisions policy annually.
