Cumbria Early Excellence Network was established and awarded its early excellence status by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) in 1999. It was set up as a way of combating the rural and social isolation of families and their children in different parts of Cumbria.
Ofsted was asked to carry out a survey to provide an evaluation of the use of grants to protect and expand local education authority (LEA) music services. This report presents the findings of the survey. It draws on evidence based on the inspection of 28 LEA music services.
In the academic year 2001/02, Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Schools (HMI) visited a sample of 93 primary, secondary and special schools to inspect the recruitment and deployment of temporary teachers, the support provided for them and how they affect pupils and permanent staff in the schools. The schools represented a range of sizes and social and economic contexts; the proportion of pupils who were entitled to free meals ranged from below 1% to over 80%.
During the academic year 2000/01, Ofsted carried out an inspection survey of the initial teacher training of primary school teachers teaching science. In order to be awarded qualified teacher status (QTS), all primary trainees must also demonstrate the required knowledge, understanding and skills to teach science successfully. This survey was designed to establish the extent to which these requirements were being met.
