Press release: Appointment of four new members to the Ofsted Board

Ed Balls, the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, today announced the appointment of four new members to the Ofsted Board. They will join the Chairman, Zenna Atkins, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector, Christine Gilbert and six other non-executive board members.The successful candidates are:

  • George Battersby - Director of Human Resources, Cable & Wireless

  • Paul Blackburn - Senior Vice President Financial Controller, GlaxoSmithKline

  • Yusuf Chuku - Founding Partner, Staufenberger, Smith & Butte

  • Vijay Sodiwala - Managing Director, Digital Ventures, Chime Communications plc

Ed Balls said:

"I am delighted to appoint four new members to the Ofsted Board. They bring with them a breadth of private sector experience and a passion to help improve the lives of children and learners. These appointments will boost the Board's strategic capability to deliver its objectives."

Ofsted Chairman, Zenna Atkins, added:

"We are appointing new Board members with the experience, skills and ability to add real value to the Board, to Ofsted and to the public that we serve. I am very much looking forward to working with the new Board members over the coming years."

1. The Ofsted Board was established by the Education and Inspections Act 2006. It consists of a chairman, the Chief Inspector and between five and ten other members. The Board has the following functions:

(i) to determine the strategic priorities for the Chief Inspector in connection with the performance of his functions;

(ii) to determine strategic objectives and targets relating to these priorities; and

(iii) to secure that the Chief Inspector's functions are performed efficiently and effectively.

2. All four appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. None of the newly appointed Board members have declared any political activity during the past five years.
