New report looks at organisations managing the Graduate Teacher Programme

21 Feb 2006

An employment-based route into teaching 2004/05 is the second of three reports looking at the quality of Designated Recommending Bodies (DRBs) and the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP). DRBs manage training through the GTP, an employment-based route into teaching, whereby schools train teachers on the job.

The report finds that the organisations responsible for managing on-the-job training for future teachers make a strong contribution to recruitment in secondary shortage subjects and from under-represented groups. However around a third of the DRBs inspected had weaknesses in subject-specific training for secondary trainees.

Although DRBs are successful in attracting well qualified candidates into teaching, the outcomes achieved at the end of the training suggests that they do not always reach their full potential. Standards achieved by GTP trainees inspected in 2004/05 were very similar to those in the previous year, with primary trainees performing better than secondary trainees.

Ofsted's Director of Education, Miriam Rosen, said:

"The Graduate Teacher Programme helps trainees develop classroom management skills quickly and those who choose this route are often more confident in dealing with discipline problems. But more attention needs to be paid to developing trainees' ability to teach their subject to a high standard."
