New report looks at the professional development of school staff
11 Jul 2006
'The logical chain: continuing professional development in effective schools', finds that continuous professional development (CPD) for staff is most effective in schools where senior managers fully understand its potential for raising standards and are committed to using it as a key driver for school improvement.
The report is based on visits to 29 schools whose previous inspection reports identified strong practice in CPD. It also considers the arrangements for staffs' professional development in different subjects following inspectors' visits to a representative sample of about 130 schools.
It describes the most effective practice as a logical chain of procedures which place continuing professional development at the heart of schools' planning for improvement. The findings are intended to disseminate best practice and to provide help to institutions seeking to improve this aspect of their work.
