Schools positive about new system of school inspection

21 Jul 2007

Ofsted has published three reports that evaluate the system of school inspection that was introduced in September 2005. 'Impact of Section 5 inspections: maintained schools in England' is an external evaluation carried out by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER), 'School inspection: an evaluation' is Ofsted’s self evaluation of the school inspection system and 'School inspectors’ letters to pupils: lessons learned and ways forward' looks at teachers’ views of the letters to pupils which are now a feature of all school inspection reports.

The report by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) found that three quarters of the schools surveyed believe the new inspections have already contributed to improvement and 85 per cent of schools agreed that the new inspection system is likely to contribute to school improvement in the future. 66 per cent completely agreed with Ofsted’s recommendations for improvement and 92 per cent of respondents thought the recommendations were helpful.

The NFER’s findings are complemented by Ofsted’s own evaluation which found that the new style inspections and reports are regarded positively by schools, parents, governors and local authorities.

Of the 45 headteachers surveyed about letters to pupils, just under seven out of 10 were very pleased with the letter and an additional two out of 10 were satisfied with the letter.
