The Learning and Skills Act 2000 gives Ofsted responsibility for the joint inspection of further education colleges with the Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI). The Act also requires Ofsted and ALI to carry out area-wide inspections of provision for 16–19 year olds as necessary. This is the first joint annual report by the inspectorates, covering the period from September 2001 to June 2002.
