In September 2002, eight new General Certificate of Secondary Education subjects (GCSEs) were introduced as part of a programme to develop further vocational provision. The subjects are: art and design, business, engineering, health and social care, information and communication technology (ICT), manufacturing, science, and leisure and tourism. During the autumn and spring terms 2002/03, Ofsted made 93 visits to schools involved in introducing and providing the new courses. During these visits, discussions were held, lessons were observed and the work of pupils scrutinised.
