The aim of this guidance is to assist inspectors to carry out registrations and inspections of:

• applicants and providers who are seeking, or who have been granted, exemption from some or all the learning and development requirements
• settings in which a provider has exempted individual children from the learning and development requirements.

This guidance supplements the main inspection guidance for early years provision which are Using the early years evaluation schedule and Conducting early years inspections.
